I loved the first 2 issues of Shazam, thought the 3rd was okay and didn't care for the 4th at all. There were huge pacing problems. I think the 4th issue had more text than the other three combined as Smith tried to explain everything before he ran out of pages.
Re: Ashcroft. Smith was working on this comic for a long, long time. I think the main villain was supposed to be Ashcroft originally but by the time it came out Ashcroft was gone so it morphed into a Aschroft/Cheney/Bush amalgam. In any case, it was juvenile and heavy-handed political commentary.
