"Why Am I Talking to You? You're Not Important."

Editorial Ass writes a post that every author -- particularly wanna-bes, but everyone could take a lesson from it -- should print out, post up somewhere prominent, and memorize.

Bottom line: be very, very careful when you begin to trade on your own self-importance.

(Oh, and this applies equally to folks who work for a publishing company: being polite and respecting the people you're actually working and dealing with is always the best policy.)

Very true. I look forward to the day someone writes one of these about editors whose self-importance is such that they can't be bothered to be civil to people who aren't their writers.

Jess: I've seen plenty -- Gawker is good for that, thought they're more likely to mention magazine people than book editors.

And part of my job for fifteen years was going to the Literary Guild party and attempt to hobnob with the guests there -- I've been snubbed by more publishing people than you've had hot dinners!
