iTunes Meme 3.0

I was poking through my archives in preparation for writing tomorrow's Book-A-Day post, and I saw that I'd done the same iTunes meme twice -- once in 2006 and once in late June of 2009. Since it's almost exactly five years since the last time, I figured I might as well do it again, because I am besotted by data and odd fact-like objects:

Total number of tracks:
  • 25,890 in 2014, or an average increase of over 1,400 songs a year
  • 18,731 in 2009
  • 14,262 in 2006
Sort by song title:
  • First Song: "A-Hunting We Will Go" by Hem (Eveningland) -- same as 2009
  • Last Song: "( )" by They Might Be Giants (Then: The Earlier Years Disc 1) -- also the same, and also still the captured phone conversation between Gloria and her friend about the Kiss Clinic, how to make money over the phone, and other oddities
Sort by time:
  • Shortest Song: "Welcome to Daytrotter" by Lisa Hannigan, at 0:02
  • Longest Song:"Pelleas und Mellisande" with Pierre Boulez conducting the Chicago Symphony Orchestra through Schoenberg's piece for 40:20 -- still the same as 2009
Sort by album:
  • First Song: "Commonplace Feathers" by Gangi (A)
  • Last Song: "Lawyers in Love" by Jackson Browne (no album listed) -- same as 2009
  • Last Song That Actually Has an Album: "Hearts" by Yes (90125) -- also the same as 2009
Top 10 Most Played Songs:
  • "Hooplas Involving Circus Tricks" by Say Hi To Your Mom -- 110 plays
  • "The Temptation of Adam" by Josh Ritter -- 109 plays
  • "Maurine" by Say Hi -- 86 plays
  • "My Rights Versus Yours" by The New Pornographers -- 81 plays
  • "Wishing Well" by The Airborne Toxic Event -- 79 plays
  • "Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh" by Say Hi -- 79 plays
  • "Wolves" by Josh Ritter -- 78 plays
  • "Traffic and Weather" by Fountains of Wayne -- 72 plays
  • "Golden Age of Radio" by Josh Ritter -- 72 plays
  • "Open Doors" by Josh Ritter -- 70 plays
  • "Our Life Is Not a Movie Or Maybe" by Okkervil River -- 68 plays
  • "Don't Look Down" by The Shondes -- 68 plays
  • "Thin Blue Flame" by Josh Ritter -- 67 plays
  • "Dramatic Irony" by Say Hi -- 67 plays
  • "Get It On" by The Chevelles -- 66 plays
  • "Marathon" by The Ettes -- 65 plays
  • "Down in the Valley" by The Broken West -- 63 plays
As before, I extended the list a bit to get to ten different groups -- though my Josh Ritter and Say Hi periods were apparently not as all-encompassing as the Fountains of Wayne period of the middle aughts was.

Search:
  • "sex" -- 201 songs
  • "love" -- 1128 songs
  • "you" -- 2551 songs
  • "death" -- 175 songs
  • "hate" -- 68 songs
  • "wish" -- 65 songs
  • "monkey" -- 58 songs
None of this means anything, of course. But it's fun to poke around and dig up these factoids.
