All of This and Nothing: Let Go

"All of This and Nothing" is a series of weekly posts, each about one song I really love, by an artist I haven't featured in the previous This Year, Portions For Foxes, or Better Things series. It alternates between Obscure and Famous songs; feel free to argue either way if you're so inclined. See the introduction for more.

I'm counting this one as Obscure because the project only put out one long-player, even though at least one of this duo went on to be mildly famous afterward. And, by "mildly famous," I might just mean "I kept track of her career and bought her music."

(They're my rules, I get to decide what counts.)

For this week, the band is Frou Frou - which is what Imogen Heap did before she went solo - and the song is Let Go.

(And, yes, this song was on the Garden State soundtrack, and I did see that movie - I'm not saying everyone in New Jersey was required to do either of those things, but you know how it is.)

Like a lot of the songs I like the best, it's atmospheric and allusive: it could be about a lot of things, depending on what the listener needs and believes and cares about right at that moment.

So let go, let go
Jump in
Oh well, whatcha waiting for?
It's alright
Cause there's beauty in the breakdown

It is definitely a song about now: about this moment right here, for the singer and the person she's singing to. About needing to do something - maybe a specific thing, maybe just that general "do something" - to mark this moment, to show that it was real and it mattered.

And Heap has a lovely voice here, quiet and controlled but commanding, and it's entirely supported by the music, far away from a normal rock sound but compelling and crystalline.

We've no time for later now
You can't await your own arrival
