Fictional Mood Swings

I remembered one of the reasons I usually don't read horror this afternoon, deep in the middle of Joe Hill's (excellent, though deeply depressing) new novel Horns:

I'm the kind of reader who often takes his mood from the book he's reading, especially with fiction. And so reading a grim book about nasty things happening to difficult people makes me a difficult person. Which is no fun for anyone.

Anyone else have that problem?

I learned that self-same fact about myself some years ago while reading Harlan Ellison. It's a lesson that stuck.
