A Beagle-O-Rama

Cat Eldridge of Green Man Review pointed me to his "What's New" page today, which collects a lot of Peter S. Beagle-related news. I'll try to boil it all down, but you can just click through for the full deal (and, of course, all of the other new reviews and whatnot at Green Man).

Beagle is publishing more books this year than the first decade of his career (I think) --
  • Strange Roads, a collection from DreamHaven Books
  • We Never Talk About My Brother, a collection from Tachyon
  • I'm Afraid You've Got Dragons, a Young Adult novel from Conlan
  • Summerlong, a novel from Conlan
On top of all that, Green Man is doing four podcasts of Beagle reading his stories over the course of the year -- they will appear quarterly -- and the first one, "The Stickball Witch" is now available in mp3 form.

2008 is shaping up to be an excellent year for Beagle fans. But what if you don't like Beagles?

Well, then, what do you think about terriers?

Update: See first comment, below, for yet more Beagle publication news and some corrections.

Two corrections, if you please: Firebird will not be publishing I'M AFRAID YOU'VE GOT DRAGONS, and Night Shade will not be publishing SUMMERLONG. Instead they are coming out in hardcover from Conlan Press.

...Firebird did have a contract for DRAGONS, but Peter pulled the book from them because of other problems with Firebird's parent company, Penguin.

...And Night Shade never did have a signed contract for SUMMERLONG, though it did come close to being published by them. In the end they couldn't hold the slot open long enough for him to make the manuscript changes that he wanted, and everyone parted company.

There will actually be more new Beagle publishing in 2008 than you mentioned:

Also on the schedule are WRITING SAREK (his STAR TREK memoir); a unicorn-themed chapbook from Borderlands Press; a delayed-but-finally-happening limited collector's edition of TWO HEARTS; a manga-style graphic novel adaptation of THE LAST UNICORN; and 4-5 other new books and reissues that will be formally announced later this year. Many things which have been pending are finally happening.

Connor: Thanks for the corrections and emendations; I've changed the original post to reflect the real publisher of those two novels.

(But note that the other publishers' editions are what show at online booksellers; I won't be the only person to make that mistake before the information is corrected there.)

Thanks for all the information here! Been a Peter S. Beagle fan (as opposed to beagle the dog fan) for 35+ years, through many years of famine, book and story-wise, and enjoy that we are having the feast now finally. And that Peter can make some money selling books and stories too!
